For Fellow Believers in the Lord Jesus Christ

Let The Dead Bury Their Own Dead

Matthew 8:22—> Amplified Bible –But Jesus said to him, Follow Me, and leave the dead [in sin] to bury their own dead. King James Version –But Jesus said unto him, Follow me; and let the dead bury their dead. – New International Version –But Jesus told him, “Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead.”

New American Standard Bible –But Jesus said to him, “Follow Me, and allow the dead to bury their own dead.”

We were having our family Bible session. Beth saw her nephew’s face look around as if he wondered how the dead could bury the dead when she quoted the words of Jesus.

She asked Mark if he was wondering about how the dead could bury the dead. He let it be known the statement did puzzle him.

Beth and I both tried to express what we felt the Lord meant when He said to let the dead bury the dead.

If someone is ALIVE in Christ Jesus they are excited about the things of God. They get excited about hearing God’s Word and Sharing God’s Word. If someone is spiritually dead they are not interested in the things of God.

We concluded that Jesus was making a point to let his Disciples know that obedience to Him is something for people who are ALIVE in Christ.

More verses from Matthew 8

18 When Jesus saw the crowd around him, he gave orders to cross to the other side of the lake. 19 Then a teacher of the law came to him and said, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.”

20 Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.”

21 Another disciple said to him, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”

22 But Jesus told him, “Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead.”

— Anyone can say they will follow the Lord wherever He wants them to go. Many will say they have something more important to do.

If we want to serve the Lord with gladness it’s imperative that we learn to hear His voice and that we are willing to let Him become Number One in our lives. If the Lord is your Commander in Chief your priorities will always be to listen to & to obey the voice of God rather than to obey the voice(s) of man. I also believe God will help you get your priorities straight if you let him.

Don’t you know if you make anything more important than God it is a sin.
